Sports Production workshop

NEW FOR 2026: EACH PROGRAM MAY BRING UP TO FOUR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE.

The summer sports production workshop was created by veteran broadcaster and teacher Michael Westbrook. It was first held in July of 2024 in Springfield, Missouri and now takes place in Bryant, Arkansas. The workshop puts a strong emphasis on teachers working together in a collaborative environment. The workshop provides a hands-on learning opportunity no matter the level of experience or background. Teachers will earn 28 hours of professional development during the three day event.

Participants will learn how to operate an effective livestream sports production for a variety of sports. Equipment from beginning level all the way up to advanced level productions will be on display for teachers to see what best fits their needs and budget.

Plus, educators will learn tips on how to manage a classroom during the day when all of your events happen at night through engaging classroom assignments.  Attendees will hear from experts in the sports production field at the high school, college and professional level. Attendees will also receive feedback on their work throughout the workshop.

Michael Westbrook

TV Production Teacher

Play-by-play Announcer

Michael Westbrook is the Founder and Director of the Sports Production Workshop. He is the Television Production teacher and adviser of the Hornet Media Program at Bryant High School in Bryant, Arkansas. He began working in radio in his hometown of Weatherford, Texas at the age of 17. He is a 2008 graduate of The University of North Texas with a degree in Radio, Television and Film.

After years of working in Texas and Oklahoma, Michael settled in Arkansas in 2013 and began teaching in 2016.  In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Bryant, he serves as the school’s football and boys basketball play-by-play announcer.

Michael is the men's and women's basketball play-by-play announcer on ESPN+ for NCAA Division I University of Arkansas Little Rock. He is also the on-site engineer for NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist University Football on the Ouachita Football Network, one of the largest DII Radio Networks in the country. He has also broadcast various high school state championship events on TV and Radio.

In four years of existence, The Hornet Media program has captured four state championships in Video News Production and two state championships in Audio/Radio Production from SkillsUSA Arkansas. Plus, a second place finish in Audio Production (2023), a first place finish in Audio Production (2024) and a second place finish in Video News Production (2025) at the National SkillsUSA Competition.

After attending the Academy of Scholastic Broadcasting Workshop in Missouri in 2018, Michael realized not every TV Production teacher had a background in broadcasting, but instead many of the teachers from across the country were simply assigned to teach the media class without the tools to succeed. He has continued to notice this trend with sports production as more schools look to their media teacher for athletic coverage.

In 2020 Michael was named the campus teacher of the year at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. He is the 2023 recipient of the Arkansas Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) Advisor of the Year and the 2025 ASPA Walter J. Lemke Award for outstanding service to the field of scholastic Journalism. Michael has a strong passion for teaching students the art of news and sports production and a strong desire to help teachers no matter the skill level to become more confident in educating their students.
